Aksum Stelae Park:

The Most Famous Towers in the World
The Stelae Park is Aksum’s most significant tourist attraction. Seated under the foot of the Bête Giorgis hills, the Park is a site where the major stelae rest. The flagship of Aksumite civilization, the Stele Park provides Aksum its grace and glamour.  It is strewn with several stelae of different sizes and shapes. While some are colossal towers, others are comparatively small stone structures.  Most of these stelae are simple, rough and uncarved.  Others are smooth. Yet others are painstakingly incised and beautifully decorated, reflecting the progress of the technology and expertise in stelae construction.  As funerary monuments and grave markers, the stelae also suggest the status of the individuals for whom they were built.
The Park is also a place where underground structures, royal tombs of the ancient times reside. Some of these are complex structures of many spacious cambers.
Before the then Governor of Tigrai, Ras Mengesha Seyoum, decided in the 1960s that the area be preserved as a state park, the site was part and parcel of the city’s everyday life. For example, the tallest fallen stele was a shared fence of two neighboring families. Even the base of the tallest still-standing stele was used by women as a “working surface.” Nonetheless, the Stele Park is a permanent exposition of ancient Aksumite architecture.
